Week #7 – Week of July 15th

It’s hard to believe that we’ve already the middle of July. I joined the farm crew back in April and it seems I blinked and now were perhaps days away from harvesting our first tomatoes of the season!

In the fields and greenhouses, we’ve been working hard this last week to get every tomato and cucumber trellised and pruned. While it can feel vicious pruning a two-foot-long sucker, helping to remove these branches will keep our plants focused on growing better fruit overall. And if you haven’t had a chance to see them yet, the cucumber greenhouses in particular have had a lovely little glow-up now that the vines are following the garden twine.

At the end of last week the crew got to enjoy some extra time together at our (belated) Solstice Slumber Party! Our farmer/chef extraordinaire Clo made an incredible dinner cooked over an open fire, then we all made camp in the back of the property and enjoyed a night with just the farm crew. I have never worked with a greater group of people and it’s my absolute pleasure to be a part of the team this year helping to grow so much incredible food. For the start of this week, aside from our normal harvesting, we’ve been prepping and planting beds for the next succession of many of our staples. Everything from lettuce and herbs, to broccoli and fennel.

As I teased earlier, we are right around the corner from our first tomatoes of the season. We are in full swing for summer squash and cucumbers. With all the broccoli and cabbages I’ve been seeing as well, I can imagine quite a few tasty dinners coming up in all of our futures.

Enjoy!
